Week 05: Inspired by a Song

This week’s challenge for the 52-Week Challenge was to create nails inspired by a song. At first, I had a hard time thinking of what to do, but after a search of iconic music video images – and then searching through my albums on iTunes – I found the perfect song to be inspired by – Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.”

I thought this would be really simple, but it took a long time to do each individual swatch of color. I used an assortment of colors and loaded them on with a thin brush.

Pro-tip: I put pure acetone in a bowl so that I could more easily clean off my brush between applications. Unfortunately, I didn’t think about how acetone would work with the plastic of the bowl. It burned right through. So, because I live in a tiny room and do my nails while sitting on my bed, the acetone melted red plastic into my sheet, my mattress pad, and the mattress beneath. So never, ever put acetone in a plastic container. Ever. Luckily, I was already planning on throwing away these sheets in about another month.

Bonus picture of the butter LONDON display at my Ulta. It was all I could do not to buy them all, but I don’t think my credit card would have liked that.

  1. They look great! Just like the video; you just need little heads singing at each other. Also, OMG! Did you not LISTEN to my acetone-eating-through-the-dining-room-table story? I hope you have a spare set of sheets and you’re not sleeping on the floor now.

CVS has acetone in the dip and twist jars, which I find easier to work with than the bottle; I just dip my brushes right in. I figure I go through the stuff so fast its not like I have to worry about contamination.

    • Apparently, your story about the acetone eating through your dining room table went in one ear and out the other. Luckily, acetone evaporates, so I just layered another sheet over it and am lying on top of that. It did go through to the mattress, but I’ll flip it over before I leave and no one will be the wiser! I need to do the dip and twist jar. I just thought I was being smart. I guess not.

I considered drawing a little Kimbra hair in black over one thumb and a Gotye hair in brown over the other, but nixed that in favor of more simplicity.
